Addison Fire Protection District #1 is active throughout the community
encouraging fire safety. The Public Education Division offers many safety
related programs.
- CPR Classes - Monthly CPR classes are offered at
Headquarters at 10 S. Addison Road. Special classes can be arranged for
community groups or businesses.
- Fire Extinguisher Training - Groups and businesses can
arrange hands-on training in the use of portable fire extinguishers.
- Block Parties - Firefighters will visit your block party,
or company or church picnic to give youngsters a chance to explore a fire
truck and learn about fire safety.
- Station Tours - Groups can schedule informative tours of
our headquarters station. This is a favorite of scouting groups.
Safety Talks - Schedule a time for firefighters to come to
your organization's meeting to address the group on any of several safety
related topics.
- Smoke Detector Program - Smoke detectors are available
for purchase at our headquarters station and free installation can be
arranged for residents who are unable to install their own. Call the Addison
Fire Protection District for more information at 630/628-3100.
Home Fire Safety
While the Addison Fire Protection District teaches and encourages fire safety
in the community, it is ultimately the homeowners’ responsibility to make sure
the home is fire safe. Here are some things you can do to protect your family.
Install and Maintain Smoke Detectors
Most fatal house fires occur at night while people are asleep. Working smoke
detectors cut the chance of your family dying in a house fire by more than 50
percent. State and local law requires a smoke detector within 15 feet of a
bedroom and at least one detector on each level of your home. Be sure to test
your detectors monthly and change the batteries annually.
Install Carbon Monoxide Detectors
It is wise to install a good carbon monoxide detector in your home. Be sure
the installation is done according to the manufacturer's recommendation. Do not
install a CO detector in a furnace room or kitchen. For help determining your
needs, please call the Fire District at 630/628-3100.
Plan and Practice Your Escape
If you have a fire, your family must be prepared to get out fast. Everyone
should know two ways out of each room. Decide on a meeting place outside where
the family will gather. Practice this drill regularly, especially with children,
so they will know exactly what to do in an emergency.
Practice Fire Safety
- Never store gasoline or other flammables inside your home. Store these
liquids in proper containers, away from any ignition sources.
- Treat electricity with respect. If an electrical appliance isn't working
properly, unplug it and have it repaired by a qualified repairman.
- Never leave cooking unattended.
- Keep clutter to a minimum. Besides being an eye sore, clutter attracts
fire.
- Furnaces and flues should be inspected annually by a qualified
professional.
