Occupancy Ordinance


The Village of Addison requires minimum standards for space, use and location of living space within a residence.

Minimum Floor Area Per Occupant

Every dwelling unit shall have at least 200 square feet of floor area for the first occupant, and at least 100 additional square feet for each additional occupant. (Children under the age of one are excluded; children ages 1 through 11 are considered one-half an occupant.)

Area for Sleeping Purposes

Every room occupied for sleeping purposes by one occupant shall contain at least 70 square feet of floor area. Every room occupied by more than one person shall have at least 50 square feet for each occupant thereof.

Prohibited Use

It is prohibited to use for sleeping purposes any kitchen, hallway, closet, basement, storage room, public area, dining room or living room.

Overcrowding

If any room used for residential purposes is overcrowded, the code official may order the number of persons sleeping or living in the dwelling to be reduced.
